a nightmare
letter to Boston Metro

October 13, 2002

On October 9, 2002 I e-mailed the Boston Metro, a free daily newspaper, regarding a column written weekly (weakly) by former Boston College and NFL player Steve DeOssie. DeOssie also appears regularly on local talk radio and sports television shows to discuss the New England Patriots.

Although the letter was edited a bit by the Metro, it's point came across. The letter, as it appeared in the October 11, 2002 issue, and the original e- mail follows.

Why do you pay Steve DeOssie to write a column? Mediocre as a player, someone somewhere has given him a second life as an analyst. It is bad enough that we have to hear his rants on radio and television. He blusters and carries on, and now he is EVERYWHERE! Worst of all, he is completely unprofessional. At least in the Metro we don't have to hear his silly retorts. Whenever someone argues against him, he resorts to personal attacks or threats. On the radio I recently heard him make a "your mother" comment before asking the opposition to meet him for a fight after they traded opposing viewpoints. I'd wager he is whipping up a threat even as he reads this ('lets see you write a better one, then we'll take it outside'). Need to get me to change the channel or turn down the volume? Steve DeOssie can help. Now he is in the Metro, right in the middle of the Friday paper, stealing space from worthwhile sports news and opinions.
