Low Moment
David Shepherd goes toe- to- toe with Dan Shaughnessy
October 2, 2002
David Shepherd e- mailed Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy regarding his September 30, 2002 column. The column was a wrap- up of the Boston Red Sox 2002 season containing the the following quote, "The high point of the 2002 Sox season probably was Derek Lowe's no-hitter at Fenway, or perhaps Shea Hillenbrand's homer off Mariano Rivera. The low moment forever will be Ramirez's disgrace in the batter's box in Tampa."

Wow, Dan, apparently you mail in your responses, as well as your columns. I
bet your father can beat up my father too, right?

Shaughnessy responds to Shepherd from his home e- mail address, takes a personal swipe at him, and ends the conversation with a comment fit for an argument between two third graders. For a writer who regularly criticizes professional athletes in his columns, the whole exchange reeks of bitterness and reveals Shaughnessy as a hypocrite. If Shepherd was an athlete, no doubt all future columns regarding him would be tainted with negativity because he replied to Shaughnessy's barbs.

Dan,
I think you hit an all-time low today(which is saying a lot!) when you
claimed the low moment(Forever?) for the Sox this whole year was Manny not
running out that ground ball at Tampa Bay. It's an indefensible claim for
low moment considering 1) he apologized to his manager & teammates
immediately afterwards 2) the Sox had already dropped out of the playoff
race & 3)he WON the game for them a couple innings later with a HR. There
were about 150 moments lower(how about Urbina giving up the 3 run homer to
Sandberg to allow the horrible Devil Rays to score 5 runs in the ninth with
no outs after Sox leading 4-0 behing DLowe entering the inning OR El Guapo
giving up the grand slam to Enrique Wilson & 2 run bomb to Giambi to blow
the game against the Yanks June 1st?).

The Red Sox won the game during which Manny did not run out the groundball. A win is not really a low point.
|
And you guys wonder why Manny won't talk to the press. He was dogged
continually for weeks by you and your brethren for a relatively small lapse
in judgement. He apologized to his manager & teammates, and went on to have
a great last 6 weeks of the season. That and the fact, it was not an
intentional move by him to show up his manager or management- it was a
frustrated hitter who has a tendency to do similar things and has for years.
It was a minor story for one day-that's it, move on!
