Mr. Shaughnessy,

I am an avid Globe reader and an enthsiastic Boston sports fan. Although I enjoy all of Boston's professional sports teams, the Red Sox are my clear favorites. As a Sox fan, I have weathered all of their us and downs, along with the rest of New England. It is amazing to me how Red Sox fans are branded throughout New England and across the country as notoriously critical and extremely bitter. For the most part, that is the case, but it is my firm belief that the Boston media perpetuates these qualities. I bellieve thatyou are not only far and above the most bitter and least forgiving "writer," but also the authority on negativity, and perhaps even, to quote a colleague, 'a closet Yankees fan.' Sure, the Sox and the rest of the Boston teams don't give us much to be happy about, but I would thinks at some point you would run out of ways to say it.Over the years I have seen the same columns rehashed. It is truly amazing that you invented the curse of the Bambino, and that people bought into it. They even changed the order that the retired numbers at Fenway are hung because of your negativity. On a recent tour of Fenway, the tour guide actually referenced you! You are like Aerosmith, same song- different lyrics. Actually, you are worse, because the theme of the song remains the same. If every Aerosmith song was about the dude who looked like a lady, they'd be the Shaughnessy's. Finally, I find you to be the biggest fairweather fan I have ever seen. This past week we were looking forwarded to a "season of pain" after a "lost spring training," but Nomo throws a no- hitter and, look out Yankees. I am sure you were referring to Carl Everett in glowing terms before his "red- headed girlfriend" comment. I look forward to future negative articles about Nomo,since he cannot throw no- hitters every day. Regardless, I am glad to see that you are living happily by manufacturing misery.
