THE COUCH
sports talk and humor

On July 8, 2000, Roger Clemen$ hit Mike Piazza of the New York Mets in the head with a 90+ mile per hour fastball. Prior to the at- bat Piazza had enjoyed a high level of success against Clemen$. Because of this success, the incident was viewed as intentional.
Here is an excerpt from New York Newsday on October 20, 2000 by Lawrence Rocca. The article was written a short time before Clemen$ would throw the sharp end of a broken bat at Piazza in the 2000 World Series.

"...in the midst of his comments, which included promises that he will continue to pitch Piazza inside, Clemen$ revealed a belief that he and several yankee$ teammates have harbored since reviewing the slow- motion videotape: the high and inside pitch would not have hit Piazza had he not thrown up his hands and deflected it further inside.

Clemen$ throws piece of broken bat at Piazza, 2000 World Series
"I thought it was the ball." Sure you did, Rocket, sure you did. Clemen$ was fined $50,000 for the incident in the 2000 World Series.

Piazza hitting himself in the head with a Clemen$ fastball

"I think it hit part of his hand and ricocheted into his head," Clemen$ said before acknowledging this partial blame: "you just don't want to be in that area. Anytime you are, it's a mistake." Reached at his New Jersaey home last night, Piazza laughed for more than 15 seconds when Clemen$' quote was read to him. He then paused and asked, "Are you serious?" When told that Clemen$ was indeed serious and some other yankee$ had privately shared his belief, Piazza laughed some more."
