It was a difficult day, but I finally finished the 2003 Boston Marathon in 4:45:01. The time was certainly longer than I anticipated, however I am happy to have finished. The weather was 70 degrees and sunny at the start, 51 degrees, sunny and windy at the finish. The weekend before I had a head cold or allergies kick in, but felt better by Marathon Monday. Unfortunately, at the half- way point I became dizzy, and ended up walking and running intermittently through the second half of the race. I was very sunburned and my legs were sore, and it has taken me one week to recover. Because of my disappointment, I am currently considering running another in the fall, possibly the Maine Marathon. Thanks again to everyone for your support and kind words through my training and the race itself. |

Training is done, now the real work comes Monday. I have run approximately 560 miles since January and raised $1695 for the Ron Burton Training Village. If I am ever going to be ready, the time is now. Thanks again to everyone who has supported me.

MESSAGE TO ALL WHO HAVE FOLLOWED ME THROUGH MY TRAINING Hi everybody, It’s difficult for me to comprehend, but in just a few more days I will be participating in the 107th running of the Boston Marathon. The last four months have been grueling, not to mention damn cold. Besides logging over 500 miles in predominantly sub- 40 degree temperatures, I've learned a lot about myself during this time- and even more about my friends and family. Your kindness and generosity, both in supporting the Ron Burton Training Village and wishing me well with my training has been terrific. I am not embellishing when I say that I could not have gotten to this point without all of you. That said, the difficult part for me comes on Monday at noon. Some of you will be along the route to cheer the runners, but others cannot make it because of work, distance or other commitments. Regardless of where you'll be, there are some ways you can keep track of the race. Below are some examples of how you come follow me or other runners on Marathon Monday, and again, thanks so much for the donations, advice and general support over the last few months: If you know you will be at a specific point along the route, e-mail me and I'll do my best to watch out for you. -Dan Scully ![]()

Last pre- marathon 8 mile run with the 6:30 L Streeters. Great group; social with a good mix of paces and levels of experience. Have met some very nice people and received some great advice. The camraderie has no doubt helped push me through many of the brutal winter nights. This group was definitely my favorite part of the training. Good luck to everyone and thanks. BTW, tonight was the best I have felt since the 22 mile run. I was a bit nervous since I was out of work sick the last two days, but I ran free and easy and the little injuries that have been bothering seem to have abated. The fact that it was sunny when we started at 6:30, especially after snow 3 of the last 4 days, contributed to a rejuventavion vibe tonight.

With the sun shining brightly, from inside it looked like a beautiful Spring morning. Outside, however, it is a different story, with 32 degree temperatures and a fierce wind. It's the first day of Daylight Savings Time but instead feels like mid- December. Today was certainly the windiest day I have encountered throughout the many weeks of training. Today's 12 mile run was rough b/c there is some residual tiredness from last week, and the aformentioned wind. I am quite sore and will take it easy this week. Just two weeks to go!

Another rainy and chilly night, hard to believe it was so warm last week. Did 6.5 miles, mostly hills. Debuted new sneakers, right ankle feels better, but top of left foot is sore.

Rainy, windy, chilly: it wouldn't be a long run without the weather giving one last kick in the ass. With three weeks until Marathon Monday, today was the last long training run. Everything from here on in is resting and refreshing- a.k.a. tapering. Today's run went well, I finished in about 3 hours, putting me on a sub-4 hour marathon pace, barring injury or other accident. I am feeling good and the toughest training is behind me. Bring on April 21- the real challenge! Got some new sneakers, Brooks, at Marathon Sports in Brookline yesterday, where I ran into Dave Greten. Small world. He was off to an anti- war protest, and I wished him bad weather. That certainly backfired on me. Anyways, I will debut the new sneakers on Tuesday night. The consensus is that three weeks is plenty of time to break them in, as I intend to run the marathon in them.

Every day this all becomes a little more real. Today I received my bib # in the mail- 19528! It was very warm tonight, so I changed my routine a bit. I went to the gym and did my usual work out, substituting treadmill work with a hilly 4.5 mile outdoor run. Just a quick reference as to how obsessed I am right now, if you look at my training log, any time you seen runs of less than 4 miles, those are nights I also went to the gym. A typical night at the gym has been 2.5 hours, broken up into lifting, running on treadmill, lifting, 45- 60 minutes on the bike and then lifting again.

With slightly less than a month until Marathon Monday, the support and generosity of my family, friends and colleagues has allowed me to raise in excess of $1600 for the Ron Burton Training Village. This represents a significant increase over the $1200 I am required to raise, and speaks volumes about the caliber of people who I am lucky enough to know. That said, I would like to thank the following for their contributions: Michelle and Chris O'Brien, Dave and Emily Greten, my Dad and step mother- Dan Sr. and Alison Scully, Matt and Karisa Stuart, Todd Stewart, Brian Calabro, Karen Beard, Clare O'Brien, Dawn Zanotti, Deborah Rowe and Jason Cherson, David 'Sheppity Shep' Shepherd, Jill Olson, Sharon and Bill Shockley, Liz Quilty, Mark and Patty Albrecht, Josh Frost, Paul and Linda Carlberg, Rena Gyftopoulos, Leah Barrett, Frank, Rose and Giselle Cosentino, Clara and Robert Albrecht, Sue Gauthier, Laura Albrecht, Kim Shai, David Duclos, Rebecca Robertson, Tim Kruse, Maureen O'Keefe, Vaneta Bernard, Grace Lee, Christine Skaliotis and John Yen. When the economy is so lousy and the country is at war, it is truly amazing that so many people have shown so much kindess for this cause and offered so much support as I train towards the 2003 Boston Marathon. Thanks again to all!!!

Was going to head into work late today, but when I got to my bus stop I realized how beautiful it was, I decided to take a vacation day. Since I ran in a 5K (more to follow) yesterday, I needed to do a long run either today or Wednesday. To be honest, a hangover was considered imminent, but I felt pretty good this morning, so I ended up doing the long run today. I did 24+ miles from Southie to Newton Corner and back, with several little add- ons. Thank God David Shepherd was home for a water break. I feel pretty good. I probably should have done a little more, but hey, 24+ is not too shabby. I also added a photo from yesterday's 6th Annual An Ras Mor 5K, Cambridge, MA. Time was 22:58, weather was sunny, 40 and beautiful. Later I ran home, up Broadway. The street was lined with parade revelers, and even though no one was paying attention to me, it gave a sense of what the crowd will be like on marathon day. Very cool.

The weather was terrible again, 22 degrees and snow with a driving wind. This morning, one of my colleagues at U.S. Bank, also a fellow member of the L Street Running Club, planned to meet right after work and run, regardless of conditions. The weather did not disappoint. The conditions were the worst since we started training. Combined with the wind, the snow was blinding, there was no traction to be had, and your socks were wet right away. We did 8 miles through the North End, and by the time we were done, right when we would normally start our run, of course it was no longer snowing. Having someone to run with on nights like these is so helpful, and another reason why the running club is such a great companion. My run tonight was buoyed by a few generous people who sent charity checks that came in the mail today. No joke- they were honestly my inspiration for running tonight. With only about 6 weeks to go, I am still a ways from the charity goal, and have been feeling a little down about it lately. To the people who have displayed enormous generosity thus far, I sincerely owe you a debt of gratitude. It has been a rough winter weather- wise, and the economy is also doing poorly. To display such kindness in this economic climate is a testament to your character. Thanks!

When I first started training, several people warned me about the 20 mile runs. These long runs were the true test. One person went so far as to incredulously remark, "see me after your 20 mile run." Knowing what was coming up this weekend has been an important benchmark for me because all of the weight the more experienced runners put on it, too. So with rain and snow forecasted and one of the longest training runs scheduled, I was not looking forward to this weekend, and I was a little nervous, to be honest. Well, I RAN 20 MILES! We were dropped off by bus in Natick and ran the marathon route through Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brighton, Brookline and Boston and then continued on to South Boston. The rain started after about 10 miles, so it could have been worse. Temperature- wise it was not too bad at all. I finished the run in about 2 hours and 50 minutes. I may not feel great physically and am looking forward to a restful couple of days, but mentally I am ecstatic. On a lighter note, I had several relevant but funny songs stuck in my head as I ran, such as Def Leppard's 'Headed For A Heartbreak' as we ran over the part of the marathon course known as heartbreak hill.

Brrr, another cold night. Ran with the 6 p.m. L Street group, the one I can normally not keep up with. So towards the end of the group run (I do an extra mile or so alone afterwards) I am running alongside one of the club's great veteran runners. We are talking about the pace and I mention how I am happy I can finally keep up. I say, "I'm not sure if everyone is tired or I am getting stronger." To which he replies, "Oh, everyone is slowed up because of the race this past Sunday." D'oh!

Great weekend, despite the poor weather. Went to Hyannis with JC, meeting my parents for dinner on Saturday night. Sunday morning ran in the Sheraton Hyannis Half Marathon, finishing 1:48:28. The weather was terrible, with rain and fog, a cold start and gradual warming. The weekend of constant rain made the course tough, with several road- wide puddles slowing the runners down. It was harder than I expected, mostly b/c my training runs have been at a much slower pace. Was good to get a feel for the crowd, so all in all it was a good primer for the future. I am very, very sore today, though.

Today is exactly 2 months until the Boston Marathon. I am half way through my training and wanted to take a second to reflect. First, I want to thank all of the people who have made donations. Their generosity and support has been tremendous and is much appreciated. I am currently a little over a third of the way to the goal mandated by the charity. I'd like to thank Todd Stewart, Matt Stuart, Patty & Mark Albrecht, Josh Frost, David Shepherd, Robert & Clara Albrecht and Debbie & Jason Cherson for their kindness. As for the physical part, my body is starting to feel aches and pains. My right ankle has been troublesome for a few weeks now, and I am getting my first blisters. The bronchitis seems to be improving, although I still feel run down a bit occasionally. The weather, however, has been the biggest challenge. Frigid temperatures and snow have been common. A blizzard has even crept into the mix. As I enter the second half of my training, I pray I can count on the continued support of my friends, and family and that I am able to stay strong both physically and mentally. An improvement in the weather would also be welcomed.

So we get 27.5 inches of snow yesterday, today I get home from work, shovel for an hour and a half then I run. Bear in mind there is snow and slush everywhere, and most sidewalks are not thoroughly cleared. Run is over, and my ankles and calf muscles are more sore than after the much longer runs. What a winter to train for a marathon.

18 miles, 0 degrees at start, 5 degrees by end. Hilly course, finished in about 3 hours. Illness is finally subsiding, feeling much stronger than a week ago. Fundraising also starting to pick up, received a few checks this week, am up to $252. Thanks to all who have been so generous thus far. Should be a great Sunday afternoon, as I have to go to work. Boo.

The running club was scheduled to do a 12 mile route this morning, so I decided to go it alone this week. The relativeley short distance is manageable alone, and allowed me to not only sleep a little extra this morning, but help with a water stop along the route. I helped with the water stop at Amhreins, came home and took a nap, and then did my run. I am still fighting as terrible cough that leaves me seeing stars everytime, but it seems to go away for the most part when I am exercising- it's when I am stationary that it is at it's worst. Regardless, I did a 14 mile route through downtown, to Brookline, up Summit Ave, which was the most difficult hill I've done so far, back down Commonwealth Ave to downtown and on to Southie. Run was easy until the hill, which was directly at my half- way point. For the first time since I have been training I felt like I would not make it, but I kept going and fought my way back.

Today was my first outside run since Monday. I have battled a cold all week which kept me out of work two days and indoors most of the week. I still have a wicked cough, but the sore throat and fatigue abated enough to allow me to pick it up a bit today. The run today was rough, I definitely felt the layoff. On the plus side, my right ankle and left foot both improved from the rest, as they felt almost normal for the first time in weeks. We got a foot of snow last night, so many of the streets and sidewalks were icy or slushy, but on the other hand the city looked beautiful.

The weather forecast for today and Tuesday was for unseasonably warm temperatures, in the low to mid- 40's. Today, however is clear, while tomorrow rain is forecasted. With that in mind, and the fact that I've wanted to change up my weekly routine a bit this week, I decided to go to the gym and then run outside tonight. My left foot and right ankle were very sore from yesterday's monumental run, but I wanted to enjoy the weather, and went for it anyways. I lifted weights, then ran 8 miles through downtown Boston, to the Back Bay and back. The contrast in temperature and conditions was amazing between today and yesterday. It is hard to believe that yesterday it was snowing, only grassy areas were covered with snow, making the run through the Public Garden and Common beautiful. I returned to the gym, lifted some more, rode 45 minutes on the exercise bike then wound up by lifting a bit more. I am not sure how I will feel tomorrow morning, but I feel great now. The new sneakers are really helping my feet as I get used to them.

With a nice rain prefacing a snowy evening and morning, conditions were wet and slippery today. Snow fell for the first hour to hour and a half, the ground was covered with slush, and the course was very hilly. I threw on my hood over my hat, that helped, but sneakers and socks were soaked from almost my first step out of the door right until the end. I was able to complete the 16.5 miles in about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The sense of satisfaction after completing these runs each week is amazing, and with some other things in my personal life coming together, I am starting to feel good about life in general.

Started week 4 very slowly after a terrible night of sleep Saturday. The Super Bowl Sunday route, 14 miles with 28 degree temperatures, took us from Southie to Dorchester to Quincy and Milton and back. It was a hilly course, which was rough on my ankles. Ice is definitely in the plans for them today. Completed the run in about 130 minutes, finishing strongly after the aforementioned slow start.

With the unusally cold temperatures forecast for tomorrow (low of 6) today seemed like a much more sensible day to run. Despite running 13.5 and walking another 2-3 (walked to/ from T for trip to/ from work) yesterday, I got up at 9 AM on MLK Day and ran 8.5 through Dowtown to the Common to Mass Ave and back. Temperature was 22 when I started, 25 when I finished and it was damn windy.

Completed the longest run of my life! 13.5 miles, tacked on an extra 1/2 mile at the end for the heck of it, 19 degrees, half the distance of a marathon in 120 minutes. I am sore everywhere, and cannot imagine how I will feel tomorrow. Another large group, but a definite dropoff compared to the previous two weeks- may be attributable to the long weekend and perhaps folks did some traveling with the extra day off.

Sundays are the long run each week in training program I am following. Today we ran 11+ miles through Dorchester, into Quincy and back. As we passed the Boston Gobe building I could not help but think of Will McDonough, who passed away Thursday night. All though he was not my favorite writer, his columns were certainly conversation pieces and his accomplishments many. Temperature was 27 degrees, and I finished in about 95 minutes. The longest run of my life was approximately 12 miles when I was on the Cross Country team in high school. That was my junior year, 1989. Next Sunday we are scheduled to run longer than that, so a major challenge lies ahead. Add to the fact that I have to work 1-5 p.m. that same day, we are looking at a very busy day. Feeling better today than after last Sunday, so as we move into week 2, things are looking up!

Did 6:30 run with L Street group. Approximately 15 runners, 8.5 miles in 100 minutes, Summer Street to Boston Common to Prudential Building and back, with 4-5 stops along way. 37 degrees was like a heatwave compared to last two times out.

Did 6:30 run with L Street group. There were only 4 of us, did a good pace down Columbia Road to UMASS Boston, around water back up Columbia. Group stopped at Columbia, I continued after a short break up East Eighth to G Street, up G (humongous hill) to Broadway, Broadway to M Street and back to Columbia. All in all, 6 miles plus, temperature 27 degrees and skies clear. Also sent out first e-mails regarding fundraising and drafted letter to mail. Exploring options for some sort of party to raise money too.

Ran ten mile loop from Curley Community Center, through Seaport District, downtown waterfront, North End, Charlestown to Navy Yard and back. Weather was 28 degrees and sunny, cold was not a factor, although there were several areas with black ice. The last portion, up L Street to Broadway and up Broadway, was toughest, going uphill. Completed course in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Legs sore, must learn a good stretching routine. Overall feel like I am off to a good start, but will have to run more during the week than I originally planned to be able to do this. It was great running with the group, not only to know where I was going, but the energy was helpful and it is always nice to have people to pace yourself with. Thank you and goodnight!

Joined the L Street Running Club today. I am planning to run the 2003 Boston Marathon on April 21. The first marathon training run with the L Street group is this Sunday at 8 A.M., 10 miles. This obviously presents two challenges: getting out of bed at 8 A.M. on a weekend, and running 10 miles. It looks like I'll have to raise $1200 for charity in order to get a number. May be running on behalf of the Ron Burton Training Village. I have to haul my arse out to Quincy to get the materials and sign up. More details to follow, but I did purchase a hat and gloves today to aid me in running in this damn New England cold.
