ATLAS BAR & GRILLE
LANDSDOWNE STREET, KENMORE SQUARE, BOSTON MA.
July 26, 2002

Atlas is an offshoot of the popular club Jillians. Located on Landsdowne Street, behind Fenway Park, the bar attracts a mix of students from the nearby colleges, clubgoers and, on game nights, Red Sox fans. The space is split into two sections, with a large front bar area with multiple televisions and a small outdoor seating area and a larger back room with another bar, a slightly raised seating area for diners and bar tables/ stools. The tables & stools are removed to free up space for a decent sized dancefloor on weekend nights. The back area also includes a massive projection TV normally showing sports. The food is standard bar fare, and the bar is stocked with a limited beer selection. You'll find the standard Bud, Coors, etc., but only limited higher end beers. It is a fun space, with pop dance tunes blaring and large crowds.
Atlas's dress code and enforcement thereof leaves much to be desired. On a recent visit after a Red Sox game, a group of friends and I gathered at Atlas for some post-game beverages. We arrived at 10 PM, wearing jeans, shorts, baseball hats and so on. As midnight approached, we were informed that Atlas has a dress code barring hats. We entered the bar wearing hats, sat and drank for hours wearing hats, and all of a sudden were asked to remove them. This policy led some to leave the already thinning crowd. Eventually there were only a small number of patrons remaining, but the staff continued to pester us regarding hats. We continued to push the envelope by putting them on as soon as the staff receded. When questioned, it was noted that we arrived and had been in the building for more than 2 hours without hassle, but were told that 'management' implored the staff to begin enforcing the rule. At one point we joked that it appeared the staff was using walkie talkies to weed out offenders. I can't be sure, but prior to being asked to remove my Red Sox visors, I could have sworn I heard a walkie talkie blast "I'm making the approach." Bartenders chatted to each other while customers waited for service. No waitresses attended to the tables in the bar area. Unfortunately, it was the staff of door attendants and bouncers who were the most attentive. Finally, one member of our party was asked to produce her identification in order to validate her age although we had been there for hours. The treatment of customers by Atlas's staff was decidely lacking, souring an otherwise enjoyable evening. OVERALL RATING: D
